“The first and foremost thing is that there are a lot of layers that happen for our retirees. You instantly lose your identity – my husband was a Chief for 11 years – nobody ever called him by his first name – he was 'Chief' for 11 years – now he’s just 'Jeff.' What is your purpose? Why do I need to get up? What am I going to do today?... And the other thing that’s different from active is active duty may have one or two calls that they have spinning in their head but because they’re so busy – they’re still doing work brain – it’s only like one or two at a time – it’s constantly being pushed out by the next one. Retirees don’t have that now so it’s all piling up – all those calls… just keep coming and they start coming from way back when you started."
